B1–B2
Text · The Digital Age

The "Dead Internet Theory" suggests that a large share of online content is no longer created by humans alone but is increasingly generated, reshaped and amplified by artificial intelligence, algorithms and automated accounts. What once sounded like an extreme internet myth has become more difficult to dismiss as AI tools have spread rapidly in recent years.

For education, this development raises serious questions. If students can no longer easily distinguish between authentic communication and synthetic content, digital literacy becomes more than the ability to use devices. It becomes the ability to question sources, identify manipulation and judge whether information is reliable, relevant and genuinely meaningful.

At the same time, the growing amount of AI-generated material does not automatically make the internet useless. Instead, it forces users to read more carefully, compare sources more critically and pay closer attention to language, intention and context. Many educators argue that these new demands could ultimately lead to a generation of stronger, more analytical readers – if schools step up their role in media education.

Critics, however, point out that not all students have equal access to the tools and training needed to navigate this changed landscape. Without deliberate effort from schools and governments, the gap between digitally confident students and those who are left behind could widen significantly.

A1.1 – Multiple Choice

auto-check · alle Dropdown

✓ Content created or shaped by non-human systems

✓ Because AI tools have spread rapidly

✓ The ability to question sources and judge reliable information

✓ The gap between digitally confident and less confident students may grow

A1.2 – True / False / Not mentioned

ZP10-Typ

✓ False – the text says "a large share", not all content.

✓ True – "a generation of stronger, more analytical readers"

✓ Not mentioned – no specific law is discussed.

✓ False – "does not automatically make the internet useless"

A1.3 – Transfer Question (offene Antwort)

Self-Assessment:

Musterlösung: Media literacy is especially important today because students are increasingly exposed to AI-generated content that is difficult to distinguish from authentic information. Schools need to teach students how to critically evaluate sources and identify manipulation. Without these skills, students may be misled by unreliable or intentionally misleading content.
